WELCOME TO THE FREMD FENCING CLUB

Welcome to the Fremd Fencing Website! My name is Vibhav Prabhakar, and I'm a senior at William Fremd High School in Palatine, IL. I started fencing in the summer of 2018 and I am currently a USFA B22 rated fencer.

My goal is to share the joy of fencing and to start a fencing club at my high school. I created this website to serve as an informational resource to those interested in joining the club. Fencing is a remarkable sport that combines athletics with strategy, and is great for anyone and everyone!

But wait, playing with swords: that sounds a bit dangerous right? Wrong. Fencing is actually a very safe sport. Fencers are required to wear protective equipment such as masks, chest protectors, etc. to prevent injuries. In fact, the possibility of getting injured is far greater in contact sports like football and basketball in comparison to fencing. So bottomline, fencing is a very safe sport.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

You might be wondering, "How does electric fencing even work?" Well, fencing blades actually have wires that run up and down the length of the sword. The tip is almost like a button, and upon hitting an opponent, the tip will depress, which completes the circuit. An electric signal then travels through a body cord that is plugged into the weapon and into a wire reel connected to the scoring machine to register a hit. It sounds a bit complicated, but if you want more information, you can check out the video below!

A LITTLE BIT OF FUN!

Here's a video of me fencing with my brother, Pranay, in our basement. Kudos to Pranay for doing an amazing job of filming, editing and lending his voice for narration for this video. He had to place his iPhone at multiple locations throughout the bout to film this video from multiple angles!

We are using a fencing scoring machine that I developed using Raspberry-Pi and Python programming language. I used low cost materials - stuff that I could find at home to create a wiring/pulley system that connects to the scoring machine. You can see more details on this here.
